#18 Lene Serpa: What Makes Integrity in Business

Listen to Lene Serpa, Head of Corporate Sustainability & ESG at A.P. Moller - Maersk.

The New Climate Institute has just released its Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor 2023, ranking the Danish transport logistics company A.P. Moller - Maersk, which operates the largest container shipping fleet in the world, as the highest in terms of the integrity of its net zero pledge.

We invited Lene Serpa, who has led the company's sustainability efforts for the past twelve years and is Chair of the Global Compact Network Denmark. She is also co-author of a book on integrating sustainability into corporate strategy (Squaring the Sustainability Circle).

Listen to this conversation about:

  • Integrity of net zero plans and climate targets
  • Key levers for the green transition of the shipping industry and challenges of the sector
  • Call for a carbon tax
  • Sustainability due diligence and alignment with international standards
  • Whether global trade is sustainable

“A lot of attention in the past few years has been on ESG, on reporting standards. But sustainability due diligence is the counterpart to that in terms of how you actually manage risks - not only within the company itself, but importantly across value chains. So the two go hand in hand.”
